Working as a truck driver is not easy at all. It's a pretty tough job, very demanding, with lots of sleepless nights, driving for hours on end, not being able to see your family for days, or even weeks. It's also quite dangerous, as truckers spend a lot of time driving on highways, often tired and drowsy, which is why there are a lot of trucking accidents on roads across the United States. But, truck driving offers a lot of benefits, as well, including high salaries, and the opportunity to visit different places, which is something that few other jobs provide. However, if you have chosen truck driving as a career, and you want to be good at it, you have to possess certain qualities regarding your personality, as well as some specific driving skills.

Truck drivers must be reliable and responsible, first and foremost. They have to make sure that they obey all the traffic rules, safety procedures, handle their cargo in a safe and proper manner, and try not to get involved in road rage or cause car accidents. On top of that, truckers must pay attention to customers' deadlines and schedules, and make sure that customers always get their cargo in time.

When it comes to personality, another good quality a trucker should have is the ability to be self-dependent. Truck drivers are on the road a lot, alone, doing all the work by themselves, including pick-ups and deliveries, and if there is an unwanted or unexpected emergency, there is no one around to help them. Also, they are the ones who are responsible of the truck and the cargo, and have to protect them against any potential risks and damages.

Being able to stay calm in stressful situations is also a good quality to have if you are a truck driver. This is because you are dealing with schedules and deadlines, as well as defects, traffic jams, poor weather conditions, which can make you lose a lot of time, and not make a delivery in time, so it's a pretty stressful environment for a person.

Good driving and truck maintenance skills are definitely a must for all truck drivers. If there is a problem with your truck at some point while you are on the road, you must be able to recognize the defect and repair it. You have to know how to change a tire, a headlight, change the oil, and other basic stuff like that. Nowadays, advanced statistical models and predictive analytics in trucking are in the focus of the driving experts and have proven significant results in decreasing the number of accidents.
